Volleyball in Brazil

Brazil's second-favourite sport, on grass, sand and indoor courts

Hva er det?

After football, volleyball is the most popular sport in Brazil. The country has won more Olympic medals in volleyball than almost anywhere else. Brazilians play both indoor volleyball (on a wooden court) and beach volleyball (two-on-two on the sand) - and they're world-class at both.

Volleyball was invented in the United States in 1895, but Brazil picked it up and ran with it. Today, the Brazilian women's and men's teams are some of the best in the world. Their bright yellow, blue and green kit is recognisable in any sports hall on Earth.

Beach volleyball is especially Brazilian. With thousands of kilometres of coastline, nets pop up on beaches almost everywhere. Children grow up bumping the ball back and forth with their friends on the sand, learning to keep it off the ground without ever taking a lesson.

Brazilian invention 'footvolley' is a version of beach volleyball where players can only use their feet, head and chest - no hands at all. It is a mix of volleyball and football, and is now a recognised sport played in several countries. Watching the players keep a ball off the sand without using their hands is genuinely amazing.

Brazil has been so good at volleyball for so long that one of its biggest stars, Giba, was once carried around on his teammates' shoulders after winning the World Championship. Brazilian volleyball matches in stadiums are some of the loudest, most fun crowds anywhere - more like a party than a sports game.

Diskusjonsspørsmål

  1. 01Why might it be helpful for a country with lots of beaches to invent sports that you play on sand?
  2. 02Footvolley is volleyball but with no hands. Can you think of other 'mash-up' sports that mix two games?
  3. 03Brazil is good at volleyball, football and surfing - lots of sports that involve standing up and moving fast. What do those have in common?
