The rock's Greek name is 'Petra tou Romiou', which means 'Rock of the Greek'. The story goes that Aphrodite, the goddess of love, rose up from the white sea foam near this very spot thousands of years ago. Ancient people imagined her stepping out of the waves as the ocean's most beautiful gift to the world.
Even without the legend, this place is breathtaking. The water around the rock is a brilliant turquoise-blue, and the pebble beach behind it glows with warm colours in the evening sun. Visitors come from all over the world to see the sunsets here, which paint the sky orange, pink and purple.
The landscape around Aphrodite's Rock is gentle and wild at the same time. Scrubby herbs like rosemary and thyme grow along the cliff paths, and seabirds circle overhead. The rock itself is worn smooth by thousands of years of waves, and at low tide you can walk quite close to it along the shore.
