The biggest island is called Lantau. It has forests, mountains, sandy beaches and even a giant bronze statue of the Buddha sitting on a hilltop, reached by a long, swinging cable-car ride.
Some islands have no cars at all. On Cheung Chau and Lamma, people walk or cycle everywhere, and fishing boats bob in the harbours. You can eat freshly caught seafood and watch the boats come in, just as families have for generations.
Many of the smaller islands are almost empty of people, places where you can hike, swim, and even spot pink dolphins in the sea. So Hong Kong has two faces: a city of towers, and a string of peaceful islands right next door.
