Qu'est-ce que c'est ?

Grand-Bassam is a historic town on the coast of Côte d'Ivoire, about 40 kilometres east of Abidjan. Its old quarter is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, filled with colourful buildings from the 1800s, wide shaded streets, and a lively beach on the Atlantic Ocean. It is one of the most visited towns in the country.

En savoir plus

Grand-Bassam was once an important trading port where boats brought goods from across the ocean. Many of the old buildings that remain have tall shuttered windows, wide verandas, and colourful painted walls. Walking through the old quarter feels like stepping back in time, with the sound of the sea always nearby.

Today the town is famous for its artists and craftspeople. The streets are lined with shops selling hand-carved wooden masks, woven baskets, bronze jewellery, and brightly patterned fabrics. Many Ivorian artists live and work here, and the town holds art festivals that draw visitors from across West Africa.

The beach at Grand-Bassam is long, sandy, and sheltered by coconut palms. On weekends, families from Abidjan come to swim and eat grilled fish at the beachside restaurants. The mix of history, art, and beach life makes Grand-Bassam one of the most lively places in Côte d'Ivoire.
