The Super Eagles - Nigeria's football team

Olympic football champions and one of Africa's most-loved teams

これは何?

Football is Nigeria's most popular sport by a long way. The men's national team is called the Super Eagles. They have won Africa's biggest football tournament, the Africa Cup of Nations, three times. They have also won an Olympic gold medal - one of only three African teams ever to do so.

The Super Eagles won the Olympic football gold medal in Atlanta in 1996. Going into the tournament, almost no one outside Nigeria thought they could win. They beat Brazil, then Argentina, and finally won the gold - one of the great surprise stories of football history. The whole of Nigeria celebrated for days.

Nigerian footballers play for some of the biggest clubs in Europe. Players like Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman and Asisat Oshoala have become stars in Italy, Germany, Spain and England. Many of them grew up playing football in the streets of Nigerian cities, with whatever ball they could find.

The Super Falcons - the Nigerian women's national team - are even more successful at home in Africa. They have won the Women's Africa Cup of Nations more times than any other team. They have qualified for every single Women's World Cup since the tournament began in 1991.

On match days, the whole of Nigeria turns green - the colour of the national kit. People wear Super Eagles shirts to work and school. Streets empty as everyone gathers around TVs in homes, restaurants and shops. A win is celebrated with car horns, drums and dancing, late into the night.

教室アクティビティ

As a class, draw the kit of an imaginary Super Eagles match against another country (any country). What would each kit look like? Then act out a one-minute 'commentary' for an imaginary goal - one pupil is the commentator, the rest are the crowd.
