Was ist das?

Traditional Palauan chanting is a form of singing in which stories, histories, and knowledge are performed in a rhythmic, melodic way that has been passed from elders to children for hundreds of generations. Before books and writing were common in Palau, chanting was the main way of keeping the community's history alive.

Palauan chants are not like pop songs - they follow very specific patterns and rules that have been handed down over centuries. Some chants take a very long time to learn because they carry complex stories. Performers must memorise not just the words but the correct melody, rhythm, and timing. Getting it right is a matter of great respect for the tradition.

Chanting is often performed at important moments: welcoming visitors, celebrating festivals, marking the completion of a new building, or gathering the community together. The sound of voices chanting together creates a feeling of unity - everyone singing as one. It is one of the most powerful ways a community can say 'we belong together'.

Young Palauans who learn traditional chanting become links in a living chain stretching back through time. Each new generation that learns a chant keeps it from being forgotten. The UNESCO programme for safeguarding cultural heritage includes oral traditions like chanting, recognising them as just as precious as buildings or paintings.

  2. 02Why might learning an ancient chant from an elder feel different from reading the same story in a book?
  3. 03Palauans say chanting creates a feeling of unity. Have you ever experienced that feeling - doing something together with many people that made you feel connected?

Aktivität für den Unterricht

As a class, create a simple chant about your school. Choose a rhythm (clap it out first), decide on a repeating line (like a chorus), and add verses about three things your school is proud of. Practise it until everyone can do it together from memory, then perform it for another class.
